A FIELD GUIDE TO PROTESTANT CHURCHES

Church life, in
more than one
dimension.

A denomination is only the beginning. Explore the beliefs, practices, and structures that make each congregation distinct.

Explore the six dimensions

A map for understanding. No rankings or recommendations.

Two churches can share a denomination and still feel worlds apart.

THE FRAMEWORK

Six lenses. A clearer picture.

Choose a dimension to see what it describes,
where it varies, and what to ask.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THEOLOGY

A vocabulary, not a ladder.

These labels can overlap. None tells you
everything a church believes.

Select a label to understand its meaning and limits.

PUT THE LENSES TO WORK

Same beliefs. Different experience.

Compare fictional profiles to see why
one label is never the whole story.

Illustrative profiles, invented for learning; not descriptions of real churches.

BEFORE YOU VISIT

Read the statement.
Observe the practice.

Start with the congregation’s own beliefs and membership policy. Then visit a service and ask how those commitments work in everyday life. Record “unknown” when the evidence is missing.

Language, culture, accessibility, congregation size, and community life also shape the experience. These six lenses are a starting point, not an exhaustive classification.

ORIGIN & SOURCES

A framework in progress.

Adapted from a Reddit discussion proposing three dimensions: denomination, theological orientation, and practical restrictiveness. Commenters suggested worship, church structure, and breadth of accepted beliefs. This version expands those ideas into six lenses.

The organization and plain-language definitions here are an editorial synthesis. This is an educational guide focused on Protestant congregations, especially in an English-speaking North American context. Terms can mean different things elsewhere.
